En películas y videos, live action es un término utilizado para referirse a trabajos en donde actúan actores de carne y hueso, a diferencia de la animación. El "live action" suele ser la norma en películas y video, por lo que el concepto puede resultar superfluo. Sin embargo, es una distinción importante en trabajos donde normalmente se esperaría una animación, como en películas animadas, un videojuego, o en donde el trabajo es adaptado de dibujos animados, como Los Picapiedra o como suele ocurrir con series de manga o anime llevadas a la pantalla por actores reales.

El término es también utilizado en el mundo de la animación para referirse a personajes que no son dibujos. Como por ejemplo, la película Who Framed Roger Rabbit donde humanos y dibujos coexisten, los personajes "live action" son los actores "reales" como Bob Hoskins, a diferencia de los "actores" animados, como el mismo Roger Rabbit.
