Sir William Huggins, fue un astrónomo británico, nacido el 7 de febrero de 1824 y fallecido el 12 de mayo de 1910 .

Construyó un observatorio privado en el número 90 de Tulse Hill, al sur de Londres donde llevó a cabo una extensa labor de observación de las líneas de absorción y de emisión espectrales de varios cuerpos celestes. Fue el primero en distinguir entre nebulosas y galaxias, mostrando como algunas (como Orión) tienen espectros característicos de los gases, mientras que otras, como Andrómeda tienen espectros característicos de las estrellas. Fue también el primero en intentar medir la velocidad radial de las estrellas.

Se casó con Margaret Lindsay Huggins, una astrónoma notable que apoyó la labor fotográfica de Huggins y le ayudó a sistematizar sus investigaciones.

Huggins presidió la Royal Society entre 1900 y 1905.

Está enterrado en el cementerio de Golders Green.
