Con el nombre de Old Wave Of Spanish Heavy Metal (Vieja ola del Heavy Metal español) se denomina a la corriente musical que apareció en España a finales de los años 70 y principios de los 80. Siguiendo la fuerte ola de heavy metal que arrasaba en Reino Unido llegaron una serie de grupos que tomaron el relevo en el genero del rock, hasta entonces representado por el rock clásico de Miguel Ríos, el hard rock de Leño o Asfalto o el llamado rock andaluz de grupos como Triana. Con la influencia de estos grupos, además de los de la entonces naciente NWOBHM, surgieron multitud de bandas que dejaron de un lado los toques clásicos y del hard rock que hasta entonces había en España, para tomar un camino más duro y oscuro, al estilo británico, pero con las líricas de reivindicación social de grupos como Leño ( cuyo estilo crítico y callejero tuvo tal influencia que pasaría a ser un género más; llamado Rock Urbano). De esta ola destacó el grupo gallego Los Suaves, apareciendo después la banda Ángeles del Infierno, que junto a Barón Rojo y Obús fueron las más importantes de este movimiento. También destacaron grupos como Panzer, y bandas de Glam metal como Niágara o Bella Bestia, además de Muro, pionero del Speed metal español. En esta década destacó además Rosendo, ex miembro de Leño, aunque este tomó un camino más cercano al rock que al heavy metal. Esta ola se expandió hasta América del Sur, quizás ya no con el nombre de Old Wave Of Spanish Heavy Metal, aunque fue derivado de aquella época. Fue también muy influyente, junto al Punk Rock, en el llamado Rock Radical Vasco, con grupos de heavy metal como Barricada. Entre otros, este apartado de la música española engloba grupos como Barón Rojo, Angeles del Infierno , Los Suaves, Obús, Héroes del Silencio, Muro, Sangre Azul o Zarpa
