Hibiscus schizopetalus es una especie de hibisco perteneciente a la familia de las malváceas. Es originaria del este de África tropical en Kenya, Tanzania y Mozambique.

Descripción

Es un arbusto, a veces enredadera, que alcanza hasta los 3 m de altura. Las flores son de color rojo o rosado y son muy distintivos sus pétalos con volantes, finamente divididos.[1] [2] Sus nombres comunes incluyen Japanese Lantern, Coral Hibiscus y Fringed Rosemallow. Los pétalos de las flores tienen una gama de colores, siendo el más común el color rojo ( Keena et al. , 2002; Ng, 2006). Las hojas se parecen a las de Hibiscus rosa-sinensis]].

Hábitat

Se encuentra en matorrales caducifolios costeras, a menudo cerca del agua, en mangles, etc ; a una altura de 1-150 metros. Nativo de la costa de Kenia y Tanzania; también se cultiva en otros países.

Propiedades

Las antocianinas se encuentran en las grandes flores de H. schizopetalus esta es la cyanidin-3-sambusophoroside (Lowry , 1976). De las hojas, dos ésteres triterpénicos nuevos han sido aislados (José y Vijayan , 2006).
