The Man Who Would Be King es una película de 1975, dirigida por John Huston, protagonizada por Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer, Saeed Jaffrey y Shakira Caine en los papeles principales, basada en una historia corta de Rudyard Kipling. La película obtuvo cuatro nominaciones a los premios Óscar: al mejor guion adaptado, a la mejor dirección artística, al mejor vestuario y al mejor montaje.
Argumento
A finales del siglo XIX dos ex suboficiales británicos y miembros de la Masonería, Daniel Dravot (Sean Connery) y Peachy Carnehan (Michael Caine) se dedican en el Raj Británico a realizar actividades de legalidad más que dudosa. Cuando oyen hablar de Kafiristan (actual Nuristan), un legendario reino situado más allá de las montañas del Himalaya, deciden probar fortuna. Tras un viaje en el que están cerca de perecer, conocen a un ex gurka, Billy Fish (Saeed Jaffrey) que les sirve de intérprete y consiguen llegar a su destino. Allí consiguen unir a pequeñas aldeas hasta formar un pequeño ejército con la idea de autoproclamarse reyes de Kafiristán. En una batalla, Dravot recibe un flechazo en el pecho sin resultar herido, ya que el proyectil se le había clavado en la bandolera que usaba bajo sus ropas. Los supersticiosos nativos empiezan a considerar a Dravot como a un dios por sobrevivir al ataque de una flecha. Los dos británicos aprovechan entonces esta nueva situación para ir más allá en sus ambiciosas pretensiones.
