El kawa-kawa o kava kava (Piper methysticum) es una planta estrechamente relacionada con el pimentero, Piper nigrum; de origen polinesio, se emplea medicinalmente como ansiolítico para evitar el uso de otras drogas potencialmente más peligrosas, como las benzodiacepinas.

Características

Es un arbusto perenne, que alcanza los 3 m de altura; los tallos son gruesos y suculentos. Las hojas son grandes y cordiformes, acuminadas, alcanzando los 20 cm de longitud. Produce inflorescencias en forma de pequeñas espigas axilares, pero los flores son estériles; se propaga por división del rizoma, echando zarcillos.

Usos

P. methysticum cumplía un papel importante en la vida social de los nativos de las islas del Pacífico a la llegada de los europeos en el siglo XVIII. Se consumía el rizoma, mascado o fermentado en agua para producir un brebaje de color parduzco y propiedades psicotrópicas. Su principio activo está compuesto por una veintena de lactonas, que conforman más del 3% del rizoma en estado bruto, denominadas kavalactonas.
