Maqil

Los Maqil o Maquil fueron un grupo de tribus árabes beduinas de origen yemení que emigraron hacia el oeste en el siglo XIII. Contribuyeron a la islamización y arabización del Magreb que estaba dominado por los grupos bereberes sólo convertidos superficialmente desde la llegada del islam en el siglo VII.

La más importante de las tribus eran los Beni Hassan, convertidos en la principal de Mauritania y el Sáhara Occidental, cuyo impacto cultural fue decisivo. Junto a los Moors y los Saharauis todavía hablan el dialecto hassanía. Aunque identificables en pequeñas comunidades, los Maquil se fueron disolviendo en el conjunto de otras tribus de la zona.
