Ventspils es una ciudad situada al noroeste de Letonia, a orillas del Mar Báltico. Está a 185 km de Riga. Su nombre viene del río Venta, que la atraviesa, y quiere decir "el castillo sobre el Venta".

Historia

Ventspils fue mencionada por primera vez en 1290. La ciudad fue construida en torno a un castillo perteneciente a la Orden Livona.

El Centro Internacional de Radioastronomía VIRAC se sitúa a 30 km al norte de la ciudad. La existencia de dicho centro, construido por los soviéticos, no le fue revelado a la población letona hasta 1994, después del fin de la ocupación rusa.
