The City Preachers es considerado el primer grupo de Folk-Rock de Alemania.

La banda fue fundada en 1965 en Hamburgo por un nativo de Londres, el banquero John O'Brien-Docker. La música era una mezcla de folclore de todo el mundo: el flamenco de España, el blues de los Estados Unidos, los sonidos del buzuki de Grecia, canciones judías y de los Balcanes. El grupo llegó a dar principio a una "canción de protesta" en lengua alemana.

Los City Preachers han producido hasta la década de 1970, en distintas formaciones. El número de miembros de la banda nunca fue constante y fluctuó entre cinco y quince personas, vendiendo bastante bien.

Desde la banda han surgido músicos de renombre, a veces a nivel internacional, como Alexandra O'Brien-Docker, Inga Rumpf, Kynaston Sibylle, Dagmar Krause, Jean-Jacques Kravetz y Udo Lindenberg. En total, más de 20 solistas de esta banda en distintas formaciones tocaron juntos según un sistema "modular", los llamados que se trate (es decir, cada un es un solista y toca con cada uno). Muy diferentes cantantes como Inga Rumpf y Dagmar Krause cantando así por parte de varios años al lado del otro en el grupo.

Se han secesionado en 1969 la banda de Frumpy (inicialmente Nueva City Preachers) de los The City Preachers.
