Mesembryanthemum es un género de planta ornamentales con 1149 especies nativas del sur de África. Muchas de las especies que formaron parte anteriormente de este género han sido trasladadas a otros como Carpobrotus y Delosperma.

Mesembryanthemum es miembro de la familia Aizoaceae, muchos miembros de esta familia, incluyendo Mesembryanthemum se caracterizan por sus grandes cabezas de flores. Las flores de Mesembryanthemum se cierran de noche para protegerse de la escarcha y las heladas y se abren con la luz del sol.
