Taste fue un grupo musical irlandés formado a finales de la década de 1960 por Rory Gallagher. El grupo mantuvo el formato de power trio hasta 1970, en que se disolvieron por diferencias entre Gallagher y los otros dos músicos. Tocaron blues, rhythm and blues y rock por los que Rory sentía verdadera obsesión.

Historia

En 1966 Rory Gallagher abandonó Fontana Show Band (luego The Impact), la orquesta en la que venía tocando desde 1964, con la decisión de formar su propio grupo. Rory contaba con 17 años, y era ya un virtuoso guitarrista que había aprendido a tocar de manera autodidacta. Entró en contacto con el bajista Eric Kitteringham y el baterista Norman Damery, ambos músicos de la banda de rythm and blues irlandesa The Axels. Comienzaron tocando su propio repertorio en salones de baile. A principios de 1967 estuvieron de tocando Hamburgo (Alemania), pero volvieron a Irlanda donde comenzaron a forjarse un nombre entre los seguidores del rythm and blues.

A finales de 1967 se encontraron tocando como residentes en un club de Belfast, donde conocieron a Eddie Kennedy, que pasó a ser su mánager, y con el que viajaron a Londres, donde pronto se hicieron famosos (consiguen una residencia en el conocido club Marquee). Grabaron una maqueta con la que Kennedy les consiguió un contrato con la discográfica Polydor, pero exigió a Rory que se deshiciese de Kitteringham y Damery, terminando de convencerle a base de engaños.[1] El propio Kennedy le puso en contacto con Charlie McCraken (bajo) y John Wilson (batería), con los que grabó dos discos de estudio, Taste (Polydor, 1969) y On The Boards (Polydor, 1970). En el último se aprecian las influencias jazz de la banda, tocando Rory el saxofón en dos canciones («It's happened before, it'll happen again» y «On the boards»).

Giraron por toda Europa (Irlanda, Reino Unido, Alemania, Dinamarca, Suecia, Suiza, Holanda,...) e incluso realizaron una gira por Estados Unidos de América (donde pasaron bastante más desapercibidos que en Europa). El ambiente en el grupo se fue crispando entre Rory por un lado y Charlie y John por el otro, debido a la intermediación de Kennedy, que, no sólo les estafaba con el dinero (que él manejaba) sino que hablaba a Rory mal de sus compañeros y viceversa.[1]

El final de Taste llegó después de su actuación en el Isle of Wight Festival en 1970, recogida en el disco Live at the Isle of Wight (Polydor, 1972) y en la película Message Of Love. 1970 Isle of Wight Festival (1970, estrenada por la BBC en 1995), en la que se recogen «Sinner Boy» y «Gamblin' Blues». Rory abandonó y el grupo se disolvió.

Sus diferencias no se aclararon hasta bastantes años después, como consecuencia de los juicios en los que se embarcaron. Después de su separación se editaron Live Taste (Polydor, 1971), el mencionado Live at the Isle of Wight e In the Beginning, an early Taste of Rory Gallagher (Major Minor , 1974).
