Primal Scream (temporalmente abreviado a PRML SCRM por la promoción del disco XTRMNTR) son un grupo de rock alternativo formados en Glasgow, Escocia, liderada por el que fuera batería de Jesus and Mary Chain, Bobby Gillespie. Actualmente el grupo está formado por los siguientes miembros: Andrew Innes y Robert 'Throb' Young son los guitarristas; Martin Duffy es el teclista; Gary 'Mani' Mounfield es el bajista; Darrin Mooney toca la batería; y Bobby Gillespie es el cantante y guitarrista. Otro guitarrista durante las giras es el productor Kevin Shields, que fue miembro del grupo My Bloody Valentine. La banda tuvo contrato hasta el año 2000 con Alan McGee's Creation; actualmente tienen un contrato con Sony/Columbia.

Historia

Primeros Años (1985 - 1991)

Formados en Glasgow por Bobby Gillespie y Jim Beattie, estos empezaron siendo un grupo de rock psicodélico, influenciados por la teoría de la terapia primal (en inglés primal scream therapy de la cual extrajeron el nombre para el grupo). La música que querían crear debía de ser algo instintiva y fundamental para nuestra naturaleza.

A mediados de los 80, Gillespie y Beattie reclutaron otros miembros, incluyendo a Robert Young (entró a formar parte como guitarrista) y Andrew Innes (in 1986). A estas alturas la banda tenía un sonido de lo más psicodélico, estaban influenciados por The Byrds y Love y formaron parte de la escena musical llamada C86 (BMX Bandits, The Mighty Lemondrops, The Soup Dragons, The Wedding Present etc.).

Su primer trabajo fue el disco Sonic Flower Groove (1987), de este álbum las posibles mejores canciones sean Gentle Tuesday y la tarareable Imperial, aunque su mejores canciones de esta época son sin duda Crystal Crescent y la cara-B Velocity Gril.

Uno de los miembros fundadores, Jim Beattie, se marcha a otra formación, Spirea X, continuando con un sonido psicodélico, mientras el trío de Gillespie, Innes y Young introducen un nuevo batería, Phillip "Toby" Tomanov (este también tocó en The Nosebleeds, The Durutti Column and Blue Orchids) y el bajista Henry Olsen (formó parte de The Faction).
